We had another great year of chess in our school this year. It is true to say that we took our eye off the ball (queen!!) for a few years but we’re flying again with lots of chess being played in alot of the classes, Christy Dowling teaching nine classes, a weekly chess club and a very competitive chess team which came so close to bringing home the bacon!

The team this year comprised of Sean and Seamus from room 13, Adam, Conor, Willie, Kuba and Hakim from room 14 and Jack from room 17. They practised hard and, after a fun blitz in St. Kevin’s Kilnamanagh, settled down to “blitz” the opposition in the real thing, the Tallaght League. We had great wins against Scoil Santain, Scoil Colmcille, St. Anne’s, St. Mary’s and St. Dominic’s to win our section of the league with a bit to spare!

Then came the semi-final against old adversaries scoil Aonghusa. We’ve had many tough battles down the years and this one was no exception! We started very strongly and raced to a 2-0 lead…..first to 3 wins! We were winning 2 of the other games so well that Pat Flaherty of Scoil Aonghusa was congratulating us and wishing us well in the final, when, somehow the tide turned and we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!! It really hurt at the time but we’re okay now!!!!

Mr. Knight is already searching high and low for the talent that’ll bring us to the next step, as well as making sure every pupil in our school gets to play chess on a regular basis and to the best of their ability!! Roll on next year.
